Quan Yi Fong, Dasmond Koh and Vincent Ng starts learning CAMP, to create an exciting and conducive environment to learn Chinese

Ah Jie Quan Yi Fong laments youths in school do not like mandarin. She, together with close friend Dasmond and former Mediacorp artiste Vincent Ng decide to start ‘Wen Fang’, to provide special courses for individuals.
Having the name ‘Wen Fang’, Dasmond laughs as he mentioned that they had thoughts of inviting Fann Wong as their spokesperson, but her fee would be way too high. He explains, Vincent’s martial arts school ‘Wu Fang’ is doing great. When the trio met up earlier, they talked about youths not being proficient in Chinese. Therefore they decided to set up ‘Wen Fang’, hoping to ride on their popularity and a whole new different style of teaching methods to attract students.
Quan says her 11 year old daughter doesn’t like to study Chinese in school. After Quan sent her to a tuition centre to pick up the language, she then started to show more interest. Quan says: “Instead of sending my daughter to a centre where others earn, I might as well start my own class where she can learn too..”
‘Wen Fang’ s’ classes will be held at Cairnhill Community Club, similar to ‘Wu Fang’, beginning with 3 courses; “Little Ones Big Holiday”, “Chinese Festivals” and “Hosting Is Fun”.
According to Dasmond, the classes are interesting and fun where students will learn in a relaxing environment about festivals and Chinese traditions etc.. After which they will have more confidence in the language. The hosting class features Quan, Dasmond and other tutors imparting their skills and knowledge. Quan added that she had the idea of this school years ago but only now then it is materialized. Their preparation which include course materials and funds, began half a year back. With the title ‘News Queen’, would Quan teach her students how to create news? She replies: “Being good in expressing yourself, helps in creating news”
Mediacorp has its own media school. Does the setting up of ‘Wen Fang’ pose a threat? Dasmond admits that it is a little sensitive, but the company has given them the green light. Current pool of teachers includes popular radio DJ Bukoh Mary and drummer Sam from Superband champion MiLuBing. Vincent will make appearances as well to spend time with the students. He reveals that he wants to focus on sports and training. As he’s been approached a few times to act again, he might consider should there be a suitable role. He is currently unattached and is waiting for someone who shares his philosophy.

  3. This is a very very good initiative. I was going to get very disappointed by how most Singaporeans disregard Chinese. Now I see a little more hope. 做得好!加油!:)

  6. Hi Desmond, I can’t believe I only found your blog now. I like your programs on air and on tv. It’s really good that celebrities are taking initiatives to promote Chinese and the learning of the language. I am very upset with MOE’s recent announcement that they may lower the weightage of MT for PSLE. So I applaud the 3 of you for supporting the language. I really hope that the Gen-Z kids can enjoy the language, and not grow more and more stranger towards it.

All the best to your career and WenFang as well.
