Final Part of Egypt Trip

28-11-2007

Morning Call timing, 0245 hrs.
We got our luggage packed because we will be checking out today, heading to Cairo.

Abu Simbel

Took a 3 hours coach ride to The famous historical site, Abu Simbel.
For safety reasons, all the coaches that will be heading to Abu, which is across the desert and about 300km away from Aswan, will gather in the early morning and travel as a convoy. There are even armed guards in each coach.

Along the way, we came across with the scene of beautiful sunrise…

In the heart of Nubian territory, almost on the borders of Sudan and about 300km from Aswan, is the most beautiful and imposing construction of the greatest pharaoh in Egyptian history.

Philae Temple

philae temple ticket

The original temple was located on a scared sacred island. With the construction of the Old Dam, the temple was submerged in an artificial lake. Only in August and September when the locked gates of the dam were opened to alleviate the pressure of the flood waters, did the island emerge from the waters so it could be visited. Between 1972 and 1980, the temple was dismantled and rebuild on this islet.

Our current position is on the High Dam. If I did remember wrongly, the guide did say something like if something were to happen to the High Dam, Egypt gonna be gone in 2 hours… Scary huh?

Updates from Egypt…

Album of Egypt Trip

26-11-2007

I woke up real late today…
Starting to enjoy the trip more and more cause it’s so laid back. Very much like a holiday.

aswan3

Went down for breakfast at 8am.
Yes… the selection is roughly the same…

Our cruise ship dock at the harbor of Edfu around 10 plus.

aswan2

Immediately we set off for Edfu Temple.

Edfu Temple 7

The best preserved temple in all of Egypt still stands in the ancient capital of the region, called by the Greeks Apollinopolis Magna. Consecrated to Harus, the temple was built by Ptolemy III Evergetes in 327 B.C. on the much older one built for Thutumosis III by the first priest architect Imhotep. Work was continued by the successors of Evergetes, up to Cleopatra VII, the last queen of Egypt.

Edfu Temple 20Edfu Temple 18Edfu Temple 11Edfu Temple 16

Edfu Temple 10

One of the question the tour guide post to us. Look at this scene on the wall. 3 on the right, 3 on the left, and 1 in the middle. So how many people are carrying the boat?

Edfu Temple 12

Look carefully, apart from the middle 1, the rest all were drawn with 5 layers, so there were altogether 31 men carry the boat…

Edfu Temple 13

And this is a replica of the boat ( the original in the Cairo Egyptian museum ).

Edfu Temple 15

Got back to the cruise at lunch hour.

cruise at Edfu

Started sailing again.
Our nest destination, Kom Ombo.

And ya… sama sama lah the lunch…

lunch

After lunch there were some hoo-ha among the few of us about making a ring or pendant with the Egyptian Heroglyphic Alphabet engraved on it…

This is how the ABC to XYZ looks ☺

I made a ring with my name ‘Dasmond’ engraved on it, which cost me US$30.

Arrived at Kom Ombo

Temple Kom Ombo

kom2

2 Temples set side by side.

kom ombo 3

On the left, Temple dedicated to Falcon God
On the right, Temple dedicated to Crocodile God Sobek.

kom ombo 6

Because it’s so near to river Nile, a few meters away, thus most part of the temple was destroyed by flood.

kom4

How to know which side to read from?

kom5

Look at where are all the animals facing. If they face right, start from the right.

Timber was placed into such holes and use to hold on to 2 stones. Water was poured in to allow it to expand for a grip.

kom ombo 1

This piece of timber was dated back to the time when the temple was built.

kom ombo 4

Mummified crocodile in the house!

Album of Egypt Trip

Yo! Greeting from Cairo, Egypt!

luxor22

To continue with the story of my previous post… during my flight from Doha to Luxor, I left a little case on the plane… nothing much inside, JUST a spare battery for my digi camera, my ear piece and a SD card :(

Not to waste the money ( a 24hrs connection cost US$26 here… ), I shall start loading up the photos and give you guys some details of how my past few days had been…

00:30 hrs

10:30 hrs Singapore Time
05:30 hrs Doha Time

08:20 hrs Doha Time
Luxor.

11:20 hrs Doha Time
10:20 hrs Luxor Time

Luxor,

cruise view

Frst stop, Karnak Temple.

The majestic avenue f ram-headed sphinxes which leads to the first pylon of the temple of Karnak. The ram headed sphinx is a symbol of the god Amon ( identified with the ram ) who protects the pharaoh, show between the beast’s front paws.

After that, we check in to the cruise which we gonna spend 4 nights…

cruise at Edfu

Next, Luxor Temple.

The Valley of the Kings

In times past this terrifying gorge stood as a place apart from life on earth, set in the midst of sun-burnt rocks. Yet the images man left in its depths are still there, testifying to a world where dignity ad respect reigned, and which gives us food for thought.

This marvelous complex can be seen easily thanks to the restoration works still in course. Created by the architect Senmut, a worthy heir to Imhotep who ad lived 1200 years earlier, it is of great importance in the story of human achievement.

Colossi of Memnon

This is what the famous stautes of Amenophis III ( Amenhotep ) are called. They are the last remains of the immense mortuary temple bilt at the beginning of the 14th century B.C., a sort of outpost in fertile land of the necropolis which lay behind.
